1. GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST (GMAT)

The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, is a standardized test designed to assess skills relevant to graduate studies in business and management. GMAT is required to be undertaken by those students who wish to pursue M.B.A in United States. GMAT measures language, quantitative and writing skills and is designed to help predict a student's potential academic performance in the first year of graduate management school. Since October 1997, the GMAT has been administered exclusively as a computer adaptive test, or CAT. The GMAT CAT consists of 150 minutes of multiple-choice testing, plus two 30-minute writing sessions. (Test takers are required to type their essays using a simple word-processing program.) GMAT is measured on a maximum of 800 marks.

Here's how the four sections of the GMAT CAT break down:

Analytical Writing Section

Analysis of an issue topic
1 essay - 30 minutes

Verbal Section

Reading comp
Sentence correction
Critical reasoning
41 questions - 75 minutes

Quantitative Section

Data sufficiency
Problem solving
37 questions - 75 minutes

The essay questions are administered first, followed by the multiple-choice sections. The question types within a section appear in random order.

CAT Format

A computer adaptive test (CAT) is very different structurally from a traditional paper and pencil test. On a CAT, the computer will select which questions to administer based on how well you're doing up to that point. If you keep getting questions right, the test will get harder and harder; if you make some mistakes, the computer will adjust and start giving you easier problems. If you answer the easier problems correctly, the computer will give you harder questions again.       Back to top

2. GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE)

Graduates planning to pursue a Masters (M.S) or Doctoral program (Ph.D.) in American Universities are required to take the GRE, conducted by Educational Testing Service( ETS), Princeton, New Jersey. GRE is required by students seeking admission to Graduate Schools, Professional colleges. It therefore follows that the student must be a graduate before he joins the Graduate school - GRE is an entrance test. GRE is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT). GRE is used to evaluate your ability and eligibility for admission. GRE is scored on a maximum of 1600 points. Analytical writing scores are given separately on a scale ranging from 0-6.Remember, GRE score is a very important and vital factor in getting admission and financial assistantship or scholarships.

GRE General Test

The GRE General Test is designed to test fundamental verbal, mathematical, and logical skills that the average student is expected to assimilate in the course of his or her college education. The vast majority of graduate programs require that prospective students submit GRE scores in order to be considered for admission.

The VERBAL sections mainly test your vocabulary and reading comprehension.

The ANALYTICAL WRITING, tests a person's ability to express his thoughts clearly & logically on the paper.

The following chart shows how the scored versions of the GRE are organized.

Paper -and-Pencil Test CAT
Quantitative Two Sections One Section
(Math) 30 minutes/section 45 minutes
30 questions/section 28 questions
Verbal Two Sections One Section
30 minutes/section 30 minutes
38 questions/section 30questions
Analytical Writing One Section
2 Topics 75 minutes

In addition to the scored sections shown in the chart, both versions of the GRE contain one unscored experimental section containing trial questions for future use. And the CAT also includes an optional, unscored research section.

The CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) Format
The computerized version of the GRE is very different structurally from the traditional paper-and-pencil test. On the CAT, the computer will select questions for you based on how well you are doing. If you keep getting questions right, the test will get harder and harder; if you make some mistakes, the computer will adjust and start giving you easier problems. If you answer the easier problems correctly, the computer will give you harder questions again.

GRE Subject Test:
The GRE Subject Tests are more specialized exams that test knowledge of specific subject areas(i.e. psychology, biology, etcetera). Unlike the GRE General Test, which assesses skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not related to a particular subject area, Subject Tests evaluate knowledge of a particular field of study. They enable admissions officers to compare students from different colleges with different standards and curricula. The Subject Tests are offered in the paper-and-pencil version only.

There are sixteen Subject Tests:

Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology
Biology
Chemistry
Computer Science
Economics
Revised Education
Engineering
Geology
History
Literature in English
Mathematics
Revised Music
Physics
Political Science
Psychology
Sociology

The subject test in Engineering is recommended for those wishing to pursue higher studies in the fields of Electrical or Computer Engineering. Aspirants of higher studies in the Basic or Social Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Molecular Biology, History, Psychology, etc.) should mandatorily take the Subject Test. The Subject Test is mainly given to boost your proficiency standards to the American level in that subject. Very few people believe in appearing for the Subject Test as they are unaware of its advantages. Every additional certificate or score report is a great plus point.      Back to top

4. INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS)

IELTS provides an assessment of whether candidates are ready to study or train in the medium of English. It is recognized widely as a language requirement for entry for all courses for further and higher education.
RESULTS
Band scores are recorded on a test report form, showing overall ability as well as performance in listening, reading, writing and speaking. There are 9 bands from BAND 1(Non-User) to BAND 9 (Expert-User).

Results are available approximately 2 weeks after the test date. Results are not given over the telephone.

The test center will communicate the results of the test directly to the institution abroad that has asked you to take the test, and a copy of the same will be forwarded to you as well.

VALIDITY OF AN IELTS SCORE

There is no specific rule with regard to the validity of an IELTS score. It is advisable to remember that it is recommended to institutions that a test report form is more than 2 years old should be accepted as present level of ability if accompanied by proof that the candidate has actively maintained or sought to improve his English language proficiency

5. TEST OF WRITTEN ENGLISH (TWE)

In the TWE examination you will be asked to write a short essay of 200-300 words on a given topic, written a period of 30 minutes. The TWE tests your ability to generate and organise ideas, to support these ideas with examples or evidence and to compose in standard written English, in response to an assigned topic. TWE is scored on a range of 1-6 and a minimum of 4.5 is needed to prove proficiency in written English.

Some institutions use the TWE scores in addition to the TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of applicants.

You cannot register to take the TWE only. Both TOEFL and TWE must be taken on the same day. There are no separate fees charged by ETS for the TWE. The TWE is administered as part of the TOEFL test.          Back to top

6.TEST OF SPOKEN ENGLISH (TSE)

The TSE examination is designed to evaluate the general oral language proficiency of non-native speakers of English. It is required mainly at graduate level and proves beneficial to students who seek Financial aid in terms of a teaching assistantship. The test is approximately 20 minutes long.

TSE examination tests a person’s ability to converse in an academic or professional environment. TSE scores are used by many North American institutions of higher education to select international teaching assistants. The scores also are used for selecting and
certifying health professionals, such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and veterinarians. The test requires you to demonstrate your ability to communicate in English by responding orally on tape under timed conditions to a variety of printed and recorded information.

On the day of the test, an interviewer on tape will ask you questions. The questions will be printed in the test book, and the time you will have to answer each one is printed in parentheses after the questions. While most of the questions on the test may not appear to be directly related to your academic or professional field, each question is designed to tell the raters how well you communicate in English.

TSE Test Fee
For the period of July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003, the TSE test fee is US$125 for all persons.
