Cyprus
is an island in the Eastern Mediterranean, has an area of 3,572 sq. miles (9.251
sq. km) and stands at the crossroads of three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa.
It is the third larger island of the Mediterranean, smaller than Sicily and Sardinian,
but larger than Corsica and Crete. It has varied and picturesque coastline of
848 miles (1,364 km) interspersed with long sandy beaches, and grows a rich variety
of vegetation and fruit. Population and language The present population
is about 705.000 and Nicosia is the capital city and administrative centre. The
native languages are Greek and Turkish but English is widely understood and extensively
spoken. German and French are spoken at hotels and shops as well.
 Climate and terrain
The climate is generally sunny and dry throughout the year. The sun shines
for 340 days of the year. Winter is mild and the bathing season practically starts
from April and only ends in November. Pine-clad forests are only a couple of hours
drive from the shore; so one can have swim and go mountain trekking or skiing,
in the cold months, on one and the same day. Health Helped by
the good climate, and the existence of excellent medical facilities, health conditions
are good. The country is free from infection diseases. Time Local
time is two hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Currency The
unit of currency is the Cyprus Pound (CYP) divided into 100 cents. Foreign Currency
can be imported without limitations. Traveler's cheques and EURO cheques and cards
are accepted. Market There is a wide selection of consumer goods.
Most well known European brands are imported or, in some cases, manufactured in
Cyprus under license. Ports and Airports There are two commercial
ports, the main port in Limassol and the Yacht marina at Larnaca, one of the best
in the Middle East. The main Cyprus International airport is located at
Larnaca while another one operates at Pafos. Cyprus air communications are served
by the national carrier, Cyprus Airways, and by over 28 other international airlines. Telecommunication Cyprus
has one of the best telecommunication services in the world, is connected with
nearly 133 countries with ISD (Instant Self Dialing) and over 214 countries can
be contacted by telex. Communications earth satellite is in operation. Naturally,
Fax facilities are also available to any country, connected with instant dialing. Electric
